A Handle Opens a World

Linea Calì is a renowned Italian manufacturer of architectural hardware — handles, knobs, and door fittings of exceptional design quality. For their 2023 annual calendar, the brief was simple: celebrate the countries where the brand is present.

What they gave me was a handle and a country name. Everything else — the research, the symbols, the visual narrative — was mine to build. I developed a concept that makes the handle the protagonist: it is not decoration, it is the threshold. Every handle opens a door onto a world.

Each of the 13 collage illustrations required deep research into the cultural, historical, natural and symbolic identity of its country — finding the elements that speak most truthfully about a place and composing them into a single, layered image where the Calì handle is always the hinge between the viewer and the world beyond.

Research First

Before touching Photoshop, I spent time researching each country — not looking for the obvious postcard image, but for the detail that carries meaning. A robin perched on Michelangelo's David because in Italy the robin announces winter and good fortune. The texture of London's red postboxes filling the circle behind Tower Bridge. The specific angle at which each handle sits changes the composition's tension entirely.

The visual language is consistent across all 13 illustrations — a warm cream background, a bold typographic treatment for the country name, and the handle always physically integrated into the scene, never floating. The object becomes architecture within the image.
